Sugaring 101 — Your Most-Asked Questions, Answered (With Love 🧡)
If you’ve ever come in for a wax and asked,
“Wait… what is sugaring?
You are not alone. We get this question all the time. So we sat down with one of our Licensed Estheticians for a relaxed, real-talk Q&A to answer your most searched, most whispered, most Googled questions about sugaring hair removal.
Let’s get into it.
What is sugaring, exactly? Is it like wax?
Short answer: No… but kind of.
Sugaring is a hair removal method made of sugar, lemon, and water. That’s it. No resins. No mystery ingredients. Just a simple paste mixed to different consistencies depending on your hair texture, skin and body temperature.
Unlike wax, which is applied with sticks and then removed with strips or left to set and them removed, sugar is hand-molded onto the skin. Sugar is applied against the direction of hair growth, the opposite of wax, and removed with the growth. That technique helps:
Reduce hair breakage
Minimize ingrown hairs
Be gentler on sensitive skin
And there’s very little heat involved; just enough to make the sugar pliable. If you’re sensitive to hot wax, this can be a game-changer.
Why do people choose sugaring?
Sugaring is great for everyone, but it’s especially great if you:
Have sensitive skin
Are prone to ingrown hairs
Don’t tolerate the heat of wax
Want a more eco-friendly hair removal option
Have ever left a waxing appointment feeling irritated
At Orange Poppy Spa we are happy to customize your service. If sugaring works best in one area and hard wax in another, then we’ll switch. Same appointment. No upcharge. Your comfort is our top priority.
Do I need to schedule sugaring or can I decide once I get there?
Great question: At Orange Poppy we do not upcharge for sugaring and in fact sometimes we use sugar and wax in the same appointment to get you the best results. We also allow the same amount of time for sugaring and waxing. However, if you want sugaring or are sugar-curious, it is important that you schedule your appointment as a sugar, not wax. Waxing is part of the standard education and licensure for estheticians in Colorado. Sugaring on the other hand is an advanced skill and we don’t let anyone see clients for a service until they are masters. Since sugaring is less common, even seasoned estheticians need extensive training when they come to Orange Poppy. So every esthetician at Orange Poppy is an excellent waxer, but not everyone is a sugar ninja yet, we’re working on it!
So please schedule accordingly.
Is sugaring less painful than waxing?
We’re going to give you the most honest answer:
It depends.
Some clients say, “Never touch me with wax again.”
Others say, “No thank you sugar.”
Here’s how we explain the difference:
Wax feels smoother going on … but can sting more coming off.
Sugar can feel more “grabby” during application … but many find it less intense during removal and far more comfortable immediately post service.
Sugaring is more of a continuous motion (no long pauses like wax), so it can feel different. But many clients leave with less redness and irritation overall.
If you're curious? We can try a patch and switch back to wax if you’re not loving it. No pressure.
Does sugaring cause fewer ingrown hairs?
When done properly, yes! Sugaring significantly reduces the risk of in-growns because sugar seeps into the follicle and is removed in the direction of hair growth, there’s less breakage at the surface.
Less breakage = less opportunity for hair to curl back under the skin.
(Exfoliation still matters though — more on that below!)
Is sugaring safe (better) for sensitive skin?
Often, yes.
There’s:
Minimal heat, sugar is no warmer than you natural body temperature
No synthetic resins that can stick to your skin as well as your hair
Less pulling on live skin cells
If you’ve struggled with irritation from waxing, sugaring may be worth trying.
How long does my hair need to be?
For both waxing and sugaring:
About the length of a grain of rice (â…› - ÂĽ inch)
Roughly 2-4 weeks of growth
When in doubt? Leave it. Too long is fixable. Too short and sugar or wax can’t grab the hair.
While sugaring can handle longer hair better than wax, excessive length (more than ½ inch, especially in the bikini area) can cause the paste to tangle or tug, leading to less comfortable service. A quick trim can help with comfort.
Pre- & Post-Care: What Should I Do?
Whether you wax or sugar, the aftercare is the same.
Before Your Appointment:
Exfoliate gently 24 hours prior
Stop using “active” skincare products in the area 2-days prior
Avoid prescription topicals in the area for 1-week prior
Oils and creams can change the consistency of sugar paste so please arrive with clean, product-free skin
After Your Appointment (for 24 hours):
Cool and calm is the goal.
We recommend avoiding or limiting:
Hot tubs & pools
Hot yoga
Intense exercise
Tight clothing
Friction (yes, including sex)
Super hot showers
If you’re feeling sensitive, give it more than 24 hours. Wear loose clothing. If you're going home? Be loosey-goosey. Your skin will thank you.
Start exfoliating again around 72 hours after to help prevent in-growns. Ask your esthetician what products would be best for your skin.
What about Brazilian sugaring specifically?
For body hair removal (including Brazilians), most people are great candidates for either wax or sugar.
For facial hair (lip, chin, brows), we often prefer wax because it’s:
More precise
More efficient in small areas
But if you're super sensitive? We’ll absolutely sugar and make it work.
We also never charge more to switch between wax and sugar. Other spas might, we don’t. We want what’s best for your skin that day.
Is sugaring less sanitary than wax?
At Orange Poppy, sanitation is non-negotiable in every service
No double dipping. Ever.
Fresh biodegradable gloves each service or mid-service when necessary
No contaminating product
Hospital-grade, EPA registered disinfectants, always
Fresh sheets and sanitized wax mats, everytime
Even though sugar is hand-molded, we treat gloves like applicators, once contaminated, they’re disposed of. Clean, professional, always.

If you’re brand new and feeling nervous (totally normal, by the way):
Start with a brow or lip wax or sugar if you’re a true beginner. These small areas are a good introduction to hair removal.
For intimate waxing, try a classic bikini line before jumping straight to Brazilian.
You don’t have to go from zero to everything. We’ll guide you at your pace.
And yes — everyone gets nervous. Even regulars.
You don’t need to apologize for sweating, your body shape, your hair length or any other ridiculous thing. Your body does what bodies do, and not only do we have bodies too, we have seen it all and we’re not judging. It’s all just hair and skin to us.
What Makes Orange Poppy Different?
This is something we don’t take for granted:

Plenty time for thorough consultation and breaks if needed
Comfortable, welcoming, private rooms
Experienced, highly trained licensed estheticians
Ability to switch methods mid-service
No upcharges for what your skin needs
You’re not on a conveyor belt here. You’re cared for.
Still Wondering…
Is sugaring better than waxing?
How long do results last? (Usually 3–4 weeks!)
